Pop art project – the shell

Pop art project – the shell; Newspaper. pigments, fake pearls and crystals and ocean decorations; 30 cm x 50 cm x 15 cm (Height when being closed); 2017

This was the enlarged object of a shell. At first, my group mates and I created a model for the shell made by clay. Then we glued newspapers to the model for many layers to make the basic part pf the shell. Finally, we added many accessories to the shell, which made it more fabulous and shiny.

By creating paintings or sculptures of mass culture objects, the pop art was aimed to have a new style for art industry. The pop art culture began in Britain in 1950s. The movement spread to United States and became popular all over the world. The name of the pop art was from an artist who drawn similar style to pop art and wrote the word “pop” in a white cloud. This was the most widespread originated story for pop art. The main material of this project was the newspaper. It seemed to be vulnerable, but adding a lot together made the shell strong.

It was hard to maintain the shape at the beginning of the project. The newspaper was wet and soft due to the glue. After a day of drying, the newspaper became harder and the shape of the shell existed. The shape of the shell was not that perfect compared to the real shell, but we covered small errors with decorations.

I want to know more about how other artists made the details to imitate the real object. Also, some artworks from other people have amazing ideas. It will be helpful to know the stories behind those works. Next time I will try a more complex shape for pop art.
